Périgord Noir guide
Thenon is an ideal base to explore the Périgord Noir: prehistory, medieval bastide towns, rivers and gourmet markets, all within less than an hour's drive.
Lascaux IV — International Centre for Cave Art
About 10 minutes from La Bergerie, Lascaux IV features a full-scale facsimile of the original cave, closed to the public since 1963 to preserve the paintings. Allow half a day for the visit and interpretation centre.
Montignac-Lascaux
The small town that gave the cave its name, on the banks of the Vézère: half-timbered lanes, a traditional market and riverside terraces.
Sarlat-la-Canéda
About 30 minutes away, the capital of the Périgord Noir and its golden-stone old town, a listed historic monument — one of the finest bastide towns in France. Market year-round, not to be missed on Saturday mornings.
Rouffignac Cave
Another major decorated cave in the valley, visited aboard a small electric train right into the heart of the cavity — a rawer alternative to Lascaux IV.
The Vézère Valley
A UNESCO World Heritage site for its many prehistoric sites (the Cro-Magnon shelter, Les Eyzies...), the valley is also great for hiking, canoeing and swimming.
The pond and its lakeside café
2 minutes' walk from the house, a pond with its own lakeside café — perfect for a quiet end of the day with the family.
Markets & gastronomy
Walnuts, foie gras, truffles and Bergerac wines: the region's markets (Sarlat on Saturdays, Montignac on Wednesdays) are a must to bring a bit of the Périgord home with you.
Hiking
Several waymarked hiking trails start near Thenon, including the Auriac-du-Périgord route (about 14 km) — perfect for a walk through the Périgord countryside.
